The Maestro, The Message and the Music: LASHAWN D. GARY

10985896_1032037430159498_7336677915615525395_n

DILIGENT PURSUIT best describes the systematic approach I have taken to the fulfillment of my dreams. It includes spirituality, education, creativity, performance, technology, preparation and perseverance. Music production and film score has been the intention of my preparation. A craftsman knows the versatility of his craft, which broadens his ability to capture the imaginations of others and accomplish the goal. The continuation of my journey has been grounded through my faith in God. The diligence of my pursuit has been in perseverance, recognizing that when one door closes, God opens another.

~LaShawn D. Gary

Throughout his much accomplished musical life. He has done just about everything you could do as a musician.. Toured with legends, written and produced for major ads, attained a Bachelors and Masters Degrees  in Music, performed as a member of one of the most storied HBCU Marching Bands, Southern University Marching Band a.k.a. “The Human Jukebox” and the list can, and does go on. It was only as of 2015. Did he decide to release his own original music as an artist. LASHAWN D. GARY, is music. in every element. The native Detroiter has a resume that reads like a career guide for one seeking a career in music. He has had more than hands on experience in many genres as not only a writer, but as composer, gifted pianist, producer, copyist, arranger and all areas in between. Beginning in the halls of Detroits Mackenzie High School and continuing to Baton Rouge , Louisiana where  he received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Southern University, Louisiana in Instrumental Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Louisville. He received training in the areas of Computer Music Technology and Jazz Composition with an emphasis on orchestration and arranging. Something that no doubt has aided him in the many positions and assignments he has  been involved in throughout his long illustrious musical career. LASHAWN, has a p12439405_255146154827123_3153904669287356316_nassion for teaching instrumental music. For the last fifteen years, he has shared his passion for music in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools, Detroit Public Schools, Ecorse Public Schools and Chicago Public Schools. He has also had the pleasure of working within the music industry with more than a few names in more than a few capacities..LaShawn’s secular work includes Keith Washington (Live Performance), Sean Kingston (Orchestration), L. J. Reynolds of the Dramatics (String Arranger), Joss Stone (Copyist), Raphael Saadiq (Copyist), Four Tops (Copyist/Arranger), Producer Michael J. Powell (Studio Musician) and Arranger Paul Riser (Copyist). He has also arranged and written for various Nationwide spots for Toyota and Detroit based Happys Pizza featuring the Four Tops.

And as blessed with the gift of music in his sou. it is also his passion to utelize his Gift in honor of the Lord. God has called LaShawn to use his gifts in the music ministries of
several churches. He served as the Director of Music for the great Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) in Detroit and  has served as a musician for St. John AMEC in Aurora, Illinois. Proverbs 18:16, “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men” has been Shawn’s experience. As a result, LaShawn served as a Co-Director of Music for the home–going services of an American Hero of the Civil Right’s Movement, Mother Rosa Parks. He has worked with sacred artist Yolanda Adams (String Arranger), Howard Hewitt (Keyboards), Pajam and Men of Standard (Keyboards), Nancy Jackson (Keyboards), Shirley Ceasar (Live Performance) and Richard Smallwood (Music Workshop/Performance).

All of which has led up to his debut album titled “LOVE, PEACE& PRAISE” released on independently LNC Music. Is not only a title, but a view of the albums content and vibe through out the superb project which features not only Traditional Jazz. But masterful Soul and Gospel influenced compositions. Soul Music gets its workouts with cuts like the smooth “Look into your Eyes” & “Runaway Love” featuring Chicago crooner Roderick Harper, who gives the likes of Will Downing a run for his money. And the Mid tempo “Every Time” featuring vocalist Melanie Rutherford, show the album is legitimately Soulful delivers on the Love, in its title. And on the Jazz side of things, GARY is a pianist virtuoso. Who seemingly glides  magically across the ivories on cuts like “Now is The Time” ,  “Serenity” and the album title cut “Love, Peace & Praise” with arrangements that echo the influences of Ramsey Lewis and Joe Sample. It is an album very steeped in Jazz. And yes the Lord is present in the Jam session on the inspirational ” Lord You’re All I Need” fulfilling the Praise. It is a necessity to all who enjoy good music. Gary recently has begun to perform in support of the project as the demand to see him live has grown. He in fact will have performed at the legendary New Orleans Jazz festival as of this writing.  LASHAWN GARY is the promise and fulfillment of his musical destiny. And to our benefit, we get to witness and experience to reverberation of this promise. ~Terry Martin ( Includes excerpts from http://www.lashawngary.com)

FRANK SIMMONS III: The Effects of Noisy Chocolate

frank

Frank “Frankie” Simmons III started his musical journey at the age of 3. He started by watching his father play the piano at home.  Once his father finished practicing the piano, Frankie would look at his fathers fingerprints on the keys believing that if he followed the prints he would sound like his father.
As Frank became older he began to rapidly advance musically developing a keen ear and unconditional love for music.  Like his father, Frank started playing piano and organ in church. He would also sit for hours and try to mimic every song he heard on the radio.  Frankie decided to become very serious about music and started his pursuit towards a bachelors in Music Theory at Marygrove College.

Frankie started to venture out and become acquainted with many great musicians around the city of Detroit playing at local clubs such as Floods and Bakers.  Eventually he went on to greater platforms such as The Music Hall, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Festivals, etc.  Frankie also started to listen to Jazz, Pop, Funk and R&B, and became very fond of the genres because it gave him a feeling of creativity he had never witnessed before only being accustomed to gospel.  In 2012 he helped form Late Nights Early Mornings band (LNEM).
LNEM is a  R&B soul band based in Detroit Michigan that has performed in many great chocvenues and also have quickly become a hometown favorite. Some of his musical influences are Earth Wind and Fire, John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Robert Glasper, Ray Charles, Eryka Badu and many more.

Frankie decided  that it was time to make his dream become a reality by recording his debut album “The Chocolate Noise Affect” which is was released on November 27, 2015 to not only rave reviews. But the album managed to log up to three consecutive weeks at number 1 on Amazon.com’s Jazz Chart. An amazing feat for an independent artist. As of recent, FRANK, with his backing unit, CLASS ACT. Have begun a tour calling it the LOUD Tour performing music from the album in various spots in Ohio including Dayton, Toledo & Wilverforce and adding Chicago and New  York to the list. And of course in the hometown of Detroit..

In the immediate look for Franks follow up as well as music from Frank with LNEM..

VIEW FROM THE INGENUE – KAT MOSCONE

” I love how diverse the industry as a whole is, but I hate how such repetitive content and genres are being pushed to the mass consumer population. I wish the top 40 had more of the music inspired by the underground, more of the music with lyrics that are abstract and describe a feeling people thought was indescribable.” – Kat Moscone

The Canadian music scene is a bit of a step child to the music indusrty. Its recognized but not well respected as serious musical contributers. To us in the states we see Canadians making music as a little brother of sorts. But then, the likes of Drake happened. And worse yet, Justin Beiber happened. And now two of the biggest selling artists in the past decade are Canadian. And, under 30. So we will be hearing from them for at least another 20 years or so. So now we are poised for a bonafied Canadian songstress to come and fulfill the Canadian Musical prophecy. Enter KAT MOSCONE. Young, talented, ambitious, accomplished and ready to further establish herself as not just a star. But as a serious contender to fill the spotlight that will eventually dim on the Rhiannas & Beyonce’s currently dominating Pop music. At a young age the already burgeoning artist has begun to make a name for herself in her native canada..“I’ve been singing since birth and performing around the same time, but I think I really became an artist when I was in grade seven. I began to understand myself and understand my music more. I was able to express my truth in a way that wasn’t biased to the artist I thought I needed to be. I started writing songs that made ME happy and it turned out it made other people happy, too.” , says the well read and confident MOSCONE. “A Professional highlight for me would be when I did a TV show that aired here in Canada, and I filmed a music video for my own song. I learned a LOT through that whole experience (good and bad) and got a lot of kat mos.jpg3exposure (good and bad). All in all, it debuted my career.”, speaking on her official start as an artist after placing on a national Reality singing competition ( like American Idol) called “The Next Star” in which she placed fourth. It led to her becoming known in Canadian households and to her first professional music video for her original song called “Lioness”.  After the show, KAT has begun to sink her teeth into creating a debut ep and building on the notoriety from appearing on the show.  “I’m influenced by a lot of new artist who have taken from the R&B and the synth pop realms and created a whole new sound. I’m obsessed with BANKS, Halsey, FKA Twigs, Unbuttoned, and Marian Hill. I feel like I’ve let my music become a flow of every part of me possible; the strength and grit of my confident soul, the modernism and revolution of the music I listen to, lyrics that reflect this poetically blunt way that I look at life… I try to use my music to be the most honest version of me. Personally, I think my dad influences me as a person most. I’ve always felt close to him and I trust him, and his opinion means a lot to me because he’s such a smart man. He’s always been truthful and supportive with me, and I love him a lot. “ speaking on her direction in music. The young ingenue is on the way to a stellar career and not afraid.Seeing music as not her passion but her lifeline. “Honestly, if I couldn’t make music, I would be dead. I struggled with a lot in my life, and I don’t feel that I would have been able to make it through without the hope of waking up the next day to sing.” A sincere artist who unquestionably knows what she wants and is willing to work to get there. Part of the treat in watching an artist like KAT grow, is knowing she will make her mark and be impactful. And, wondering how far will she go. With the heart of a Lioness (ie. her debut video) it is only a matter of time when the view from her perch be not only a fulfillment, but only a rung on the ascent. – Terry Martin

HYBRID QUEEN – Malinda LeBeau

malinda2

“The life of an artist….Choosing to follow the right path. Don’t stand at the fork in the road too long. The seasons will change.” – Malinda LeBeau

To be an artist. Aspiring or otherwise. Plain and simple. You must be built for this. And its evident those who were, versus those who assume they are. A certain air or aura surrounds and supports the artist. Theirs, is a certain movement to their steps. To their tone. Their deliberate confidence not to be mistaken for arrogance. MALINDA LeBEAU is a Singer-Songwriter/Producer from Detroit, MI whose coined her R&B inspired sound as “Hybrid”.., and wears her artistic merit like a weapon. One she wields to live, and lives to wield. An alumni of Detroit’s legendary Cass Tech High School, malinda “There are only two types of people in the world, people who graduated form Cass Tech, and those who wish they did.”a quote from the vicarious LeBEAU, about her Alma Mater and its historical local legend. An artist of this caliber only comes around ever so often. . LeBeau is a complete artist and a stickler for the creative process. Her ear reaches for melodies and lyrics that surpass the complexities of contemporary popular music and are executed with ease on stage. Malinda cites Kanye West, Beyoncé, and Drake as her artistic standard but is truly a unique artist in her own right. She has also been inspired to carry out her business as not only an artist. But, as CEO of her own musical company called LeBeau Music LLC. “Whenever your business or ear finds its way to LEBEAU MUSIC LLC, expect to leave with industry standard writing, vocals, quality and earnest intent to create a product worthy of rotation.”, Hints that she takes this music thing as serious as Samuel Jackson.  A graduate of Western Michigan University as well, MALINDA has released her own independent project called “LOUD LOVEwritten, produced, and performed by herself. She only aims to let the world in on her sound. “Everything is art, the world and everything it has to offer is art.” says the talented sister. And we know she has everything to offer to this world, and it we will be greatful for it

THE ANOMOLY OF PIERRE. . PIERRE ANTHONY

pierre fire

“I keep this thing real because thats the only way I know how to do it.”

– Pierre Anthony

If real recognize real. Then what do you recognize when you see Pierre Anthony? The prototype of raw talent, Pierre has been a staple on the Detroit scene for well over 5 plus years and his reputation is well earned as it is respected. First off, there is no turn down when he is on the set. A gifted individual who’s talents exceed exceptional. He breathes what he is. Raw Talent..period. Its is God Given. And he unleashes it with reckless abandon, on all in earshot or in the vicinity. He is an amalgamation of styles, genres, and personas that come together in a Voltron like assemblage to form the Stage stalker who takes no prisoners. Rapper, Vocalist, Poet, Songwriter, Activist. . are just some of the forms he embodies to get his musical message out. And the response has been one of mass approval. A recent video of Anthony performing an original song called “Motor City”. Performed acapella  with Anthony assisting himself with just a chair, made its way to World Star, garnered over some 100,000 views upon arrival. Largely due to its lyrical content naming every street in Detroit. Inciting a  pride only reserved for sports team victories not seen since the Pistons Bad Boy eras. A second video of Anthony performing another original song call “You don’t Love Me”, to a classroom of mesmerised teens in Detroits notorious Brightmoor section, has also begun to gain steam as well. He also performs with local Detroit band Gorilla Funk Mob on occassion to give his sound a more rounded edge.  Pierre is by all accounts a devout Detroiter. He wears this on sleeve like a second skin. Also a devout community supporter. He performs from the stage to schools along with his message of positivity and responsibility of and for our youth.

A disciple of Marley, Wonder and Marvin,  as well as contemporaries Lyfe Jennings, DeAngelo and Wyclef Jean..fusing genres of Soul, Hip Hop, Gospel, Rock and Poetry, Anthony wears his heart on his sleeve thru his music. And those listening feel him as much as they hear him. “I keep this thing real because thats the only way I know how to do it.” And without question thats just the way we like it.

EVER EVOLVING PHOENIX…LaSHUAN PHONIX MOORE

lashaun4

“As an artist, I’d to be viewed as a woman who is agile.  I’m flexible and can bend with the times.  I think music and artistry is much like the human spirit.  It is ever-evolving and there’s no one right way to do it.  I’d like to be an ever-evolving artist, because I’m an ever-evolving woman.”  –LaShaun Phoenix Moore

No truer words that describe not only the mission of an artist. But, a mission statement of life. And words you can expect to hear form the multi talented and most importantly ever evolving artist herself, LaShaun Phoenix Moore. One of Detroits most respected and revered artists. Moore, who also capably Raps as well as being an adept poet, has built her reputation through earnest tenacity and continual growth.” I’ve been singing since I was child.  I fused music in with poetry for about thirteen or fourteen years and I’ve been performing as a vocalist for about 7 years now.  Music has been my greatest form of escapism.  It’s how I move through life.”  ,says Moore whos performances are events that involve the audience as participant rather than spectator. You feel her performances and root for her as a sister would. A tribute to a performer who respects her audience and gies her all to make each performance count. Reminiscent of other performers such as Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Ledisi, Moore delivers. “Musically, I’m most influenced by Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder and new-schooler Anderson Paak”.,It is hard to distinguish who appreciates whom more, Phoenix of her supporters, or her audience of her. Her growth as an artist has propelled her on a path of greatness as well as in, the path of greatness. “I’ve had the chance to work with some incredible hometown heroes like L’Renee and Monica Blaire.  Working with them allowed me to share stages with Anthony Hamilton, Kem, Ledisi and Gladys Knight.  I’ve also had the chance to perform at the Fox Theater twice.”

And she is more than capable of holding down a stage or two on her own. Her 2015 release “Anthem” and its subsequent release performance and party received glowing reviews from not just the captive audience. But from Detroit magazine Metro Times, who describe her album as  “Not typical.  And, it takes chances with sound, lyrics, and language . But the combination succeeds because she is such an extremely versatile artist.”, She is as hardworking  as she is talented, a incredible combination that yields immaculate results. In an industry where talent is often overlooked, Moore is a welcome change of paste. “What I love most about the industry is that in spite of whatever preconceived notions people have, it’s never too late to get started and it’s never too late be impactful.  Good art impacts.  I spend less time focusing on what makes me uncomfortable about the industry because I’m only down to attract goodness.  Focusing on the negative things only draw them to you.  I’m good on that.”

Ever the optimist, LaShaun is every bit the person she is evolving to be. Great to be assimilated into your greatness LaShaun.. – Terry Martin
